Acupuncture
The idea of using acupuncture to control pain and aches is a relatively modern idea dating back to 1958. Applied to dentistry, Acupuncture was suggested to have effects on:
- Temporo mendibular (TMJ) pain.
- TMJ clicking and locking.
- Pain in facial areas.
- muscular spasms.
- Stress induced headaches.
- Migraine.
- Dental anxiety.
- Dry mouth and many other problems
Acupuncture, as it is well known, utilises fine needles that are inserted under the skin and stimulated gently by hand or using a gentle current. It is thought to "re-channel energy through meridians" and in western medicine terms its thought to inhibit pain receptors somehow!
Acupuncture is not supposed to be a painful procedure although there might be a slight level of discomfort. This method works for many patients and can help them with problems other than their dental anxiety as well.
