h1. FAQs about Professional Tooth Whitening dentists in Leeds

What is professional tooth whitening in Leeds?

Tooth whitening in Leeds can be a highly effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface.

Laser tooth whitening by your cosmetic dentist in Leeds is the most effective method of lightening your teeth.

Your cosmetic dentist, at Clarendon Dental Spa Leeds West Yorkshire, will be able to tell you if you are suitable for treatment.

Hydrogen Peroxide (in the form of Carbamide peroxide) is the active ingredient in professional tooth whitening products.

As the active ingredient is broken down, oxygen gets into the enamel on the teeth and the tooth colour is made lighter from within.

Why would I need tooth whitening?

Tooth colour is predetermined during tooth development in the jaw. Teeth vary in colour, just like our eyes and hair, from person to person.

Teeth also discolour as we age. Only a small percentage of people have brilliant-white teeth. So most people would benefit from professional tooth whitening.

Other causes of tooth discolouration include:

  • tea/ coffee
  • wine
  • nicotine
  • plaque/ tartar

How long does tooth whitening take?

1 hour In-Chair Laser tooth Whitening in Leeds:
Your lips and gums are first protected by a rubber dam. Your cosmetic dentist then applies the whitening gel, which was specially designed to be used with our Tooth Whitening Light System.

The Tooth Whitening Light and Tooth Whitening Gel combine to gently penetrate your teeth, breaking up stains and discolouration to produce the tooth whitening effect.

At-Home tooth whitening Leeds
Step 1. Our cosmetic dentist will take an accurate impression (mould) of your teeth.

Step 2. A Special 'Custom-made' bleaching tray is constructed by skilled dental technicians.

Step 3. You wear these specially designed and comfortable tooth whitening trays at home. (for long lasting results patients typically need to wear these trays 'At-Home' for one hour daily for up to two weeks).

How long will my tooth whitening effects last

Our Laser teeth whitening Leeds effects can last up to 2 years.
Tooth whitening effect duration is reduced with excessive drinking of tooth staining drinks and smoking.

However, at Clarendon Dental Spa, we provide At-Home Tooth Whitening Maintenance kit that will keep your teeth will sparkling for years!

What are the side effects

A few people will find that their teeth become sensitive to cold after treatment. Others report small wite patches on the gums.

These symptoms usually resolve within a few days.

Patient satisfaction and safety is assured, at Clarendon Dental Spa, through state-of-the-art technology and our highly trained cosmetic dentists in Leeds West Yorkshire.

How do I care for my teeth after tooth whitening in Leeds?

You can help to keep your teeth white by reducing the amount of food/ drink that can stain teeth and reduce the tooth whitening effects.

We recommend the following tips to care for your teeth following tooth whitening:
- rinse with water after consuming tooth staining drinks
- use a straw when appropriate or possible
- brush your teeth twice a day using a fluoride toothpaste
- cut down on how often you have sugary snacks and drinks
- visit your dentist twice a year.

All of the above aim to maximize the tooth whitening effects for longer.

What about home tooth whitening kits

Home kits are cheaper. However, as tooth whitening is a complicated procedure, you should have a thorough examination and assessment of your teeth by one of our cosmetics dentists.

Over-the-counter kits are not recommended as they usually contain only a small concentration of hydrogen peroxide (the whitening product). Thus, home kits will not be able to lighten your teeth noticeably and instead contain acids. These products have been known to cause pain, ulcers and damage to the gums if used incorrectly.

You can perform tooth whitening at home by using the Clarendon's 'At-home' tooth whitening kit which comes in its very own stylish tooth whitening presentation case. This home tooth whitening procedure is prescribed and supervised by our cosmetic dentists to tailor treatment to individual patient needs.

What about whitening toothpastes?

There are several tooth whitening toothpastes on the market.

However, they do not affect the natural colour of your teeth, but may be effective by removing surface staining and therefore may improve the overall appearance of your teeth.

Tooth Whitening toothpaste may also help the effect last, once you have had professional tooth whitening.

Also, not all tooth whitening toothpastes have been scientifically and clinically checked by an independent panel of experts.

When might tooth whitening not work?

Tooth whitening in Leeds will not work on false teeth such as dentures, crowns and veneers and bridges.

For stained dentures visit your dentist and ask for them to be cleaned. Stained veneers, crowns or dentures may need replacing; again ask your dentist.

FAQs about Dental Veneers in Leeds

What is a porcelain dental veneer in Leeds?
Just like a false fingernail that fits over a nail, a porcelain dental veneer is a thin layer of porcelain made to fit over the front surface of a tooth.

When is a porcelain veneer necessary?
Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth. Precise shades of porcelain can be used to lighten front teeth. Porcelain veneers are also used to repair chipped front teeth.

Porcelain veneers can also be used to close small gaps, when orthodontics (braces) are not suitable.

The cosmetic dentists at Clarendon Dental Spa Leeds are adept at porcelain dental veneers smile improvements.

What are the advantages of porcelain dental veneers?

  • Veneers can improve the colour, shape and position of your teeth.
  • Veneers make teeth look natural and healthy.
  • Veneers require minimal tooth preparation, so anaesthetic is not always needed.
  • Veneers are long-lasting as they are held in place by a special strong bond (rather like super-glue).

How are teeth prepared for porcelain dental veneers in Leeds?
The cosmetic dentists in Leeds will remove a minimal amount of tooth enamel to make space for the veneer, if needed.

The cosmetic dentist then takes an 'impression' (mould) of your teeth that have been prepared for veneers.

The cosmetic dentists at Clarendon Dental Spa will also use computer software to take an accurate shade of adjacent teeth to ensure your veneers look entirely natural.

How long will it take to have my dental veneers fitted?
Your cosmetic dentist will advise you on the clinical time it will take him/ her to prepare your teeth for the porcelain veneers.

The cosmetic dentist in Leeds will then courier all photographs, models, impressions and relevant computer software recordings to the laboratory for construction of your dental veneers. Skilled dental technicians then construct your precision dental veneers.

Clarendon Dental Spa can arrange for your dental veneers to be prepared and fitted on the same day!

Will I need temporary dental veneers between visits?
As dental veneer preparation is so minimal, temporary dental veneers are not usually necessary. Your cosmetic dentist will advise you if will be required to wear temporary dental veneers.

How long should my dental veneers last?
Dental veneers should last for many years. However, your cosmetic dentist will advise you on how long each individual dental veneer should last.

Small chips to dental veneers can be repaired, or a new veneer fitted if necessary.

White Fillings in Leeds

White fillings in Leeds West yorkshire are increasing in popularity and are used to repair damaged teeth following decay, tooth wear or trauma.

White fillings can also be used to replace your old, unsightly amalgam (metal) fillings and are mercury free.

These white fillings (Composite Resins) are bonded (adhesive) to the tooth structure and come in an array of tooth colours that can accurately matched to each individual tooth.

Benefits of tooth coloured white fillings:

  • Are mercury free
  • Look natural. Composite fillings come in a range of tooth colours to match to the shade of your teeth
  • Composite fillings need less tooth preparation (drilling), making composite a less destructive restoration.
  • Are adhesive. This allows the dentist to build-up chipped or fractured front teeth or even build-up badly broken down teeth

Your first visit

At the first appointment we will find out:
* what your concerns are
* what you hope orthodontic treatment can provide for you

If you are happy to proceed we will need to collect more information about you. This will include recording impressions of your teeth and taking x-rays and photos of your teeth and face.

After this we will come up with a plan and discuss treatment options showing you the type of braces that you would benefit from and the time it would take and other details of your treatment including cost. You will of course have an opportunity to ask questions regarding your treatment.

Invisalign® Leeds

Invisalign® can help you get the great smile you've always wanted because it's...

Invisible, so no one can tell you're straightening your teeth. So now you can smile more during treatment as well as after.

Removable, so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are no problem.

Comfortable, because it has no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. Also no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in your orthodontist's practice getting adjustments.

How Does Invisalign® Work?

  • You wear each set of tough, clear plastic aligners for about 2 weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss. The aligners should be worn for 22 to 23 hours a day for the best results.
  • As you replace each aligner with the next in the series, your teeth will move - little by little, week by week until they have straightened to the final position.
  • You'll visit your orthodontist about once every 6 weeks to ensure that your treatment is progressing as planned.
  • Total treatment time averages 9-15 months and the average number of aligners worn during treatment is between 18 and 30, but both will vary from case to case.

Lingual braces in Leeds

Lingual braces are the ideal choice for those people who want their teeth straightened but who do not want the reality of having braces as a key part of their smile and appearance.

The difference between lingual braces and traditional braces is that they sit behind your teeth so that nobody will see them unless you want them to.

Lingual braces are custom made for each individual patient based upon a cast and mould of the patient's teeth. The brackets are created from this mold and set within a plastic applicator, which acts as a guide when the brackets are inserted in the back of your teeth. When the dental adhesive holding the lingual braces have set, the plastic applicator is removed. A special wire is then installed on your back of teeth, which will function by pulling your teeth into their correct alignment.

Clear Braces in Leeds

Clarity aesthetic braces are the clear alternative to metal braces. Unlike traditional metal braces in Leeds, you won't have to worry about showing a "train track" every time you smile.

Clear braces Leeds are becoming more and more popular, especially with adult orthodontic treatments where aesthetics are important

An attractive translucent appearance and comfortable design gives you all the self-confidence you need to face each day with a smile.

You'll be noticed but your braces won't.

Clarity braces won't stain or discolour but will look as good the day they come off as they did the day they were put.

FAQs on Orthodontics in Leeds

Q. How can I arrange an appointment to learn more or have orthodontic treatment?
A. Call 0113 245 9004 to speak to our friendly team or complete the 'register my interest' section at the top right of this screen. Remember to type orthodontics in the comments section.

Or if you already have a dentist you can ask them to refer you to Clarendon Dental Spa for orthodontic treatment.

Q. How are orthodontic problems corrected?
A. First, pre treatment records are made. These records are used to make an accurate diagnosis and include a medical/dental history, clinical examination, plaster study models of teeth, photos of the face and teeth and x-rays of the mouth and head. This information will then be used to decide on the best treatment.

A custom-made orthodontic treatment plan involving the braces needed to correct the problem is then designed for you and any questions you have regarding treatment can be discussed and answered.

When the orthodontic appliances are in place they are adjusted periodically so that the teeth are moved correctly and efficiently.

The time required for orthodontic treatment varies from person to person. An important factor in how long a patient wears braces is how well the patient cooperates during treatment.

After active treatment is completed, the "retention" phase begins. Retainers are designed so that the teeth stay in their new positions.

For severe orthodontic problems, surgery may be recommended.

Q. Will it hurt?
A. Some discomfort can result when teeth are loosened for movement but this generally only lasts for 48 hours or so. Each adjustment can mean minor discomfort although this often reduces as your orthodontic treatment progresses.

Q. Will my mouth be sore in between visits?
A. Your mouth is very sensitive to change and it will take you a few days to get used to wearing your orthodontic brace. At first, your teeth may feel uncomfortable because of the pressure put on to them by the orthodontic brace. It may also feel uncomfortable and tight against your teeth after it has been adjusted.

Painkillers such as those you normally take for a headache can help. Some parts of the orthodontic brace may also cause discomfort to your gums and lips, causing sore spots. We will give you clear wax to place over any part of the brace that is causing discomfort. However, if after a few days any part of your brace is causing continual soreness you should contact us.

Q. Can adults still have orthodontics?
A. Orthodontics can be successful however old you are, and adults especially appreciate the benefits of a great smile. Healthy teeth can be moved at almost any age. About a fifth of all patients in orthodontic treatment are over 21 although treatment can take slightly longer than in children.

Adults however may have had some breakdown of the tissues that support the teeth and may require periodontal (gum) treatment before, during and/or after their orthodontics treatment. Bone loss can also limit the amount and direction of tooth movement that is advisable.

Orthodontics treatment may be only a part of the patient's overall treatment plan and where necessary your treatment will be coordinated with the oral surgeon and family dentist to assure that a complicated adult orthodontic problem is managed well and complements all other areas of the your treatment needs.

Because an adult's facial bones are no longer growing, certain corrections may not be accomplished with braces alone. The average treatment time is about 24 months and varies with individual patients. Usually, adult treatment takes a little longer than a child's treatment.

Q. How long will the orthodontic treatment take?
A. The length of treatment depends on how severe the problem is, and may take anything from a few months to two and a half years. Most people can be treated in one to two years.

Although the average treatment time is about 24 months, this varies with individual patients. Usually, adult treatment takes a little longer than a child's treatment. Other things to keep in mind are the severity of the problem, the health of the teeth, gums and supporting bone and how closely the patient follows instructions. While orthodontic treatment requires a time commitment, most people feel the benefits are well worth the time invested.

Q. How many visits will it take?
A. Orthodontic appliances usually need adjusting every 6 to 8 weeks. These time intervals may vary during the course of your treatment.

Q. How successful will it be?
A. Success depends on a partnership between the skills of the orthodontist, and your enthusiasm and help. It is important to attend regularly and carry out any instructions given.

Q. How do I care for my brace and teeth?
A. It is important to continue to have your teeth checked by your dentist while having orthodontic treatment. You also need to take extra care of your teeth and mouth:

  1. Clean your teeth carefully every day, including between your teeth where you can. Appliances are delicate and you need to make sure you clean them carefully so that they do not break. You will be shown the special techniques to use depending on the appliance you are wearing.
  2. Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks. Avoid 'snacking' on foods or drinks containing sugars, and on fizzy drinks. Also, sticky and hard foods such as boiled sweets, ice, carrots, crusty bread and pizza crusts may damage the delicate orthodontic appliances which in turn may lengthen the treatment.
  3. Brush your teeth after every meal with fluoride toothpaste and, if necessary, use a mouthwash. Your dentist or hygienist may recommend a fluoride toothpaste or application for you to use. Look for a product carrying the British Dental Health Foundation's accreditation logo. This shows that the product has been checked by a panel of experts and does what it says on the packet.

Q. Is there anything I should avoid?
A. Nail biting and chewing your pen or pencil can damage or break your orthodontics brace.

Q. Can I do sport whilst wearing my braces?
A. If you have a removable brace then it is best to take it out and put in a brace case. If you do remove your brace, it is important to use a mouthguard and then put your brace back in as soon as possible. It is also best to take your brace out if you are swimming. If you have a fixed brace you should wear a special mouthguard for use during contact sports over the brace. Tell us about this and we can make you a mouthguard at the practice

Q. What if I lose or damage my braces?
A. If you lose or damage your orthodontics brace contact our orthodontist as soon as possible. Do not wait until your next routine appointment because any time that you are not wearing your brace, or it is not in the correct position, affects your treatment and makes it more likely that your teeth will go back to their old position.

Q. Why are retainers needed for orthodontic treatment?
A. After braces are removed, teeth can shift out of position if they are not stabilized. Retainers provide that stabilization and are designed to hold teeth in their corrected, ideal positions until the bones and gums adapt to the treatment changes. Throughout life your face and jaws change and therefore it is unrealistic to assume your teeth will not move. To maintain your new smile we advise you to continue wearing retainers 1 to 2 nights a week long term.

The orthodontic retainers you are fitted with can be removable or fixed depending on the original problem.

Q. What if the orthodontic retainer breaks or is lost?
A. Phone up as soon as possible for an appointment. If you do not wear your retainer your teeth may move. You will be charged for a lost retainer.

Q. How much will it cost?
A. We offer payment plans enabling patients to conveniently spread the cost across the course of the treatment. Because no two treatment plans are the same, costs will vary. We will explain all potential costs before commencing any treatment.

Q. Are there any hidden costs?
A. Fees are charged for missed appointments, and for appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours notice. There may also be a charge for lost braces and broken appliances. You may have to pay your dentist for any treatment that he carries out, including dental extractions.

Emergency care
Orthodontic emergencies are fortunately very rare. Occasionally brackets (the small metal or ceramic blocks) become loose from the teeth. If this occurs, use the wax in the starter kit if it is uncomfortable and contact the surgery to arrange a repair.
Long wires which poke out of the back of the brace can also be eased with wax. Contact us during surgery hours to arrange for the wires to be cut shorter.

Broken or lost retainers or functional braces should be reported to the practice as soon as possible to arrange for a repair or replacement.

Any other problems should be reported early in order to allow the treatment to progress efficiently.

FAQs about Dental Implants in Leeds

What are dental implants in Leeds?
A dental implant is a titanium metal rod which is placed into the jawbone.

Dental implants are used to restore gaps in your mouth by supporting one or more false teeth (e.g. a crown denture or bridge)

Having a dental implants placed is a simple procedure which will allow you to eat and smile with confidence.

Are dental implants safe & how long do they last?
Dental implants have been proven to work successfully over the last 30 years. For more info visit http://www.adi.org.uk With the right care, over 90% dental implants can last for more than 10 years.

Your cosmetic dentist can advise you on how long your dental implants are expected to last.

I still have some of my own teeth. Can I still have dental implants?
Yes. You can have any number of teeth replaced with dental implants from one single tooth to a complete set.

Can dental implants always be used to replace missing teeth?
Yes, in most cases. However, the condition of your jaw bone is crucial.

Our cosmetic implant dentists in Leeds will arrange for a number of special tests (including digital radiographs), at Clarendon Dental Spa, to assess the amount and quality of bone still present.

What happens after the dental implants are placed?
Your cosmetic dentist will provide full after care instructions and relevant pain relief +/- antibiotics.

Do not smoke, drive or exercise for the rest of the day after having dental implants. Avoid rinsing and eat soft foods for the first day and keep good oral hygiene. Use a chlorhexidine mouth wash ever day after dental implant placement (e.g. Corsodyl), for the first week.

How do I care for my dental implants?
After-care is important if you are going to have a long-lasting and successful dental implants. Your cosmetic dentist will provide full after care advise and assistance following placement of your dental implants.

Cleaning around the teeth attached to the dental implants is no more difficult than cleaning natural teeth. However, there may be areas that are difficult to reach around the dental implant and you’ll be shown methods to help you.

You may need to visit your hygienist more often but your cosmetic dentist will be able to advise you regarding this.

Do dental implants hurt?
Dental implant placement is done painlessly under local anaesthetic.

A small cut is made in your gum to expose the bone where your tooth/teeth are missing. A hole is created and the cylindrical titanium implant is inserted. The gum is then stitched back over the implant and left to heal for a few months. This is to allow the bone to grow around the dental implant (osseointegrate), making it secure.

How soon can I have my new dental implant teeth?
After placement of the dental implants, the dental implants need to bond (osseointegrate) with the jaw bone. This takes at least 3 months in the lower jaw and 6 months in the upper jaw.

Sometimes the dental implants may be stable enough when they are fitted for the artificial teeth to be attached much sooner than this.

If you are having one, two or three teeth replaced, you will have a temporary restoration in the meantime. If you have complete dentures, then these can be worn throughout the healing period once they have been modified after the surgery, until your Dental Implant Dentures are ready.

Can I remove the teeth that are attached to the dental implants?
No. As teeth attached to dental implants can only be placed and removed by the cosmetic dentist.

However, if you have Dental Implant Dentures fixed to the dental implants by bars, then you’ll be able to take them out for cleaning.

What happens if the dental implant does not bond (integrate) with the bone?
Fortunately dental implant non-integration is rare.

If the dental implant becomes loose after or during the healing period it is easily removed and healing takes place in the normal way.

Once the jaw has healed, another dental implant can be placed there. Or the cosmetic dentist can make a dental bridge if appropriate.

Q. How often do will I need treatment for Botox in Leeds?

A. To maintain your new youthful look you may need 'touch-up' treatments twice a year with Botox®.

Touch-up treatments with dermal fillers (Hydrafill and Restylane) are also usually needed twice yearly, as over time these natural fillers are absorbed by your body. Thus, if you decide to stop treatment your skin will gradually return to its original shape.

Our experienced clinicians will develop a tailor-made treatment plan that is right for you.

Q. How much will Botox in Leeds cost?

A. Each unique rejuvenation treatment at Clarendons starts from around £264, depending on the areas of the face covered.

Also visit our Dermal fillers treatment section for complete facial rejuvenation.

Dental Sedation in Leeds

Leeds' expert sedation dentists. Our Anxious and dental Phobic Patient Plan using dental sedation, excellent facilities and friendly staff make us confident that you will only need one visit to us for your dental phobias and apprehensions towards dentistry to change.

Most patients develop their dental phobia due to a previous 'bad experience' at the dentist. For these patients sedation is one of the best options to allow the dentist to carry out treatment.

We believe that everybody is entitled to a healthy mouth and a beautiful smile. This is why we aim to help such patients to achieve these goals.

Our clinicians are fully trained and have great experience in treating anxious patients, in both general practice and in a hospital setting.

Our team have also undertaken more advanced training (Diploma in Dental Sedation) and are also apart of The Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry (SAAD)

Our team are also taking referrals from fellow dentists throughout Yorkshire to treat many of their anxious and dental phobic patients for treatment under dental sedation in Leeds.
