Root Canals (Endodontics)

It is our number one priority, that we fulfil your dental care needs!

Root canal treatment is commonly known as a root filling or Endodontics. Contrary to popular belief, the treatment is not usually painful. All teeth have a central core known as the pulp – which is the soft tissue within the centre of the tooth, containing nerve fibres and small blood vessels. The root canal system consists of this pulp, and it encompasses the crown of the tooth up to the end of the root. This procedure involves removing damaged, dead or infected pulp, and filling the space that’s left behind.

At Clarendon Dental Spa, we use the latest and most effective local anaesthetics and Root Canal Treatment equipment, in order to ensure a pain-free experience.

The benefits

  • Root Canal therapy can prevent or stop toothache and/ or infection.

  • Root Canal Treatment allows otherwise unsalvageable teeth to be saved and then restored (fixed), with either a filling or crown.

  • Without Root Canal Treatment, the tooth would inevitably have to be removed due to pain and/ or infection. There is also a risk that the infection can spread beyond the tooth if Root Canal Treatment is not carried out.

Restoration of Root Canal treated teeth

  • Following a Root Canal Treatment, teeth will often require some form of restoration to give functional and aesthetic results.

  • These restorations will involve the use of one or all of Posts, Cores and Crowns.

  • Posts are used to retain a core structure that can be used in the final restoration. The post size and length will be decided by one of our experienced dentists.

  • Cores of treated teeth may be used if they exist, and that’s if the structures of the tooth are undamaged.

  • Once the Root Canal Treatment is finished, the canals will be filled, and the opening that leads to the canal is restored with a filling that is likely to be glass ionomer. The crown of the tooth is restored with or without a post depending on the case, and as the dentist sees fit.

  • An impression will then be taken and a crown is made to give you a perfect fit for amazing functionality, durability and aesthetics.

FAQ’s

Treatment is only needed when the pulp is shown to be infected by bacteria. Symptoms of an infected pulp are usually feeling pain when eating/drinking as well as having a loose tooth.

If the pulp is irreversibly damaged (e.g. through trauma or tooth decay) it can die and cause toothache and or infections such as dental abscesses. This is when you’d need to get the root filled.

After applying a local anaesthetic to numb the area, the surgeon will insert a hole to the crown of the tooth, in order to remove any diseased tissue as well as to disinfect the pulp chamber and root canal. A temporary filling will then be placed for the time-being.

The length of time before a permanent filling is put in place depends on the condition of the tooth, however, it shouldn’t be more than a few days.

The idea is to save the tooth already in place. If left untreated, the tooth will have to be removed, which can be replaced with an implant/denture. Nevertheless, we always advise patients to preserve the natural tooth where possible.
